The main suspect in the killing of Osman Hadi has been sent to judicial custody in India after completing a period of police interrogation, during which investigators claim he admitted involvement—an allegation he later denied publicly.

Faisal Karim Masud and his associate Alamgir Hossain were produced before a court in West Bengal on Sunday. After hearing the case, the court ordered both to remain in jail custody for 12 days. They are expected to appear again before the court on April 2.

Detention Near Border

The two men were detained on March 8 from Bongaon, a border area close to Bangladesh. Initially arrested on charges related to illegal entry, they were later taken into police custody for questioning by the Special Task Force (STF) for two weeks.

After the remand period ended, authorities presented them before a magistrate in North 24 Parganas. Standard medical checks were conducted before their court appearance.

Conflicting Statements

While speaking to reporters outside the court, Faisal denied any involvement in the killing, stating clearly that he had no connection to the crime. He avoided responding to questions about whether he had been falsely accused.

In contrast, STF officials indicated that both suspects had acknowledged their role in the attack during interrogation, creating a contradiction between official claims and the accused’s public stance.

Details of the Killing

Osman Hadi, a figure linked to a civic movement, was shot in Dhaka on December 12 last year. He was later transferred to Singapore for treatment but died from his injuries on December 18.

Bangladeshi investigators identified Faisal, reportedly a former নেতা of a banned student group, as a key suspect. According to law enforcement sources, the attackers used a motorcycle, and both Faisal and Alamgir were allegedly present at the scene.

Authorities said the suspects fled Bangladesh shortly after the incident, crossing into India through a border route in Mymensingh district.

Return Process in Motion

Officials in Bangladesh have begun the legal process to bring the suspects back from India. Coordination between the two countries is underway to complete the necessary procedures.

Earlier, a charge sheet was filed against 17 individuals in connection with the case, with 12 already in custody in Bangladesh. Investigators continue efforts to trace others linked to the incident.

The case remains under close watch as legal proceedings continue in India and preparations for extradition move forward.

Dhaka, February 13, 2026 – The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) announced that it will form the next government by February 15, following its sweeping victory in the 13th National Parliamentary Elections.

The party plans to enter Parliament alongside its allied parties, according to Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who spoke from his Thakurgaon residence on Friday.

BNP Cites Public Support and Challenges Ahead

Fakhrul described BNP as a “party of the people” and pointed to the rise of extremism in the country, blaming it on oppressive forces during the election period. He noted that Jamaat-e-Islami achieved strong results partly due to political pressure on other parties.

The BNP leadership plans to gradually implement the July National Charter, along with its election manifesto and the party’s 31-point program. Fakhrul called the party’s overwhelming win a reflection of the public’s trust and support.

Election Results: BNP Secures Majority

The Election Commission (EC) has announced the official results for 297 parliamentary seats:

  • BNP: 209 seats

  • Jamaat-e-Islami: 68 seats

  • Khilafat Majlis: 1 seat

  • Gonosonghoti: 1 seat

  • BJP: 1 seat

  • Gonodhikar Party: 1 seat

  • Independents: 7 seats

Two seats in Chattogram remain unannounced due to ongoing court proceedings, and one seat was uncontested. Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said voter turnout was 59.44% for the general election, while 60.26% participated in the referendum, with the ‘Yes’ vote leading with 48,074,429 votes against 22,565,627 ‘No’ votes.

Referendum Backs State Reforms

The historic referendum on constitutional reforms showed a clear victory for the ‘Yes’ side, signaling broad public support for the July National Charter and the planned restructuring of Bangladesh’s political system. The EC confirmed that results from 299 constituencies were fully counted, while Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4 remained under legal review.

International Leaders Extend Congratulations

Following BNP’s landslide win, several Indian leaders sent messages of goodwill. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee congratulated Tarique Rahman, the BNP chairman, and extended greetings to all citizens of Bangladesh, wishing them well ahead of Ramadan.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also personally called Tarique Rahman to convey his congratulations. Modi highlighted the historic and cultural ties between India and Bangladesh and reaffirmed India’s support for regional peace, stability, and prosperity.

Key Takeaways

  • Government Formation: BNP to assume power by February 15.

  • Parliamentary Outcome: BNP wins 209 seats, Jamaat 68 seats, other parties and independents fill remaining seats.

Dhaka, Feb 10, 2026: Members of the outgoing interim government of Bangladesh, along with their spouses, have submitted their latest wealth disclosures, revealing changes in their assets over the 2024–25 fiscal year. The statements, covering the period from June 30, 2024, to June 30, 2025, show that advisers and their spouses experienced a median asset growth of around six percent.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus reported an 11 percent increase in his personal wealth, amounting to roughly Tk 1.6 crore over the year. In contrast, his wife Dr Afrozi Yunus saw a sharp decline in her financial holdings, with her total assets falling by about 40 percent following a significant drop in liquid assets.

Environment and information adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan disclosed that her total assets declined by nearly half, largely due to a reduction of about Tk 1 crore in financial assets. Her husband, Abu Bakar Siddique, reported no notable change in his wealth during the same period.

A similar trend was observed in the family of health adviser Nurjahan Begum. While her own assets remained mostly stable, her husband KM Asaduzzaman reported a substantial fall in wealth, with financial assets shrinking by Tk 1.64 crore, partially offset by a modest increase in non-financial holdings.

Land adviser Ali Imam Majumder reported mixed changes. Although his non-financial assets declined by Tk 11 lakh, his financial assets increased significantly by Tk 62.7 lakh, pushing his overall wealth from Tk 3.37 crore to Tk 3.88 crore.

Former information adviser Mahfuj Alam recorded a notable rise in assets, increasing from Tk 4.2 lakh before assuming office to Tk 12.8 lakh by the end of the fiscal year.

Former sports adviser Asif Mahmud, who did not hold a taxpayer identification number prior to joining the cabinet, declared assets worth Tk 15.3 lakh upon leaving office.

Local government, rural development, industries, and housing adviser Adilur Rahman Khan reported that his assets more than doubled, attributing the increase primarily to inherited land and residential properties. His wife, Dr Saira Rahman Khan, also reported a 12 percent rise in her total wealth.

Primary and mass education adviser Dr Bidhan Ranjan Roy and religious affairs adviser Dr AFM Khalid Hossain both reported asset growth of approximately one-third. Dr Roy’s wealth rose by Tk 1.36 crore, while Dr Hossain added Tk 25 lakh in financial assets. Dr Hossain’s wife, Kamrunnessa Hasina, disclosed a 40 percent increase, driven mainly by gains in non-financial assets.

Commerce and civil aviation adviser Sk Bashir Uddin, the wealthiest member of the interim cabinet, reported little overall change in his holdings. With assets valued at around Tk 92 crore, he added approximately Tk 54 lakh during the year.

Culture adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki experienced an overall decline in personal wealth, as a reduction in non-financial assets outweighed a small increase in financial holdings. His wife, actress Nusrat Imrose Tisha, however, saw her assets surge from Tk 1.4 crore to nearly Tk 3 crore within a year.

According to the disclosures, Sk Bashir Uddin remains the richest adviser, followed by planning adviser Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud and Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus. Dr Wahiduddin attributed his asset growth to proceeds from a development-related agreement.

At the lower end of the spectrum, fisheries adviser Farida Akhtar is the least wealthy among advisers—excluding the two youth advisers—with declared assets of approximately Tk 1 crore.

Dhaka, February 9, 2026 — Nationwide restrictions on mobile financial services (MFS) and internet banking, imposed ahead of the 13th national parliamentary election, have created widespread financial disruption, particularly affecting the poor and middle-class families who rely on digital transactions for daily survival.

On Monday, field visits across Dhaka and several districts revealed that most mobile banking agent outlets remained closed, a situation set to continue until midnight on February 12. Citizens report being unable to access critical funds for healthcare, education, and essential living expenses.

Income Loss Hits Small Traders and Agents

From urban centers to rural villages, many earn their livelihood through mobile banking operations. Daily wage earners, small traders, and MFS agents have been left without income for days, while their customers are unable to access cash or complete essential transactions.

Medical Emergencies Stalled

The restrictions have had life-threatening consequences for families dealing with critical illnesses. Patients needing immediate funds for cancer treatment, kidney dialysis, or heart care are facing delays.

Sajib Ahmed, a college student from Kushtia, said: “I came to Dhaka with some money to start my father’s cancer treatment. My family sold a small piece of land and collected Tk 4 lakh, but they cannot transfer it to me because mobile banking is blocked. My father’s treatment cannot wait.”

Even short delays, families say, can have serious consequences when urgent medical care is required.

Household Expenses and Education in Limbo

Many families living in cities rely on mobile transfers to pay tuition fees, school expenses, and house rent. Guardians report being at risk of eviction or having their children miss school due to the restrictions, despite having funds ready in their accounts.

Credit Card Payments Blocked

Salaried individuals relying on mobile banking to pay credit card bills are also affected. Md Haider Ali, a Dhaka-based service holder, said:

“I deposited money into my mobile wallet to pay my American Express bill by the 12th. Suddenly, I couldn’t transfer or withdraw funds. Now I will be fined for no fault of mine.”

No Response from Bangladesh Bank

Attempts to reach Bangladesh Bank officials for comment were unsuccessful. The contact number listed on the central bank’s website (880255665001) was found inaccessible and returned a recorded response stating “wrong number.” A senior official attached to the Finance Advisor of the interim government said:

“We do not deal with this issue. Please contact the Bangladesh Bank in this regard.”

Background: Election-Period Restrictions

Bangladesh Bank imposed the restrictions to prevent fund misuse during the election. Key measures include:

# MFS transfers capped at Tk 1,000 per transaction, Tk 10,000 per day.

# Person-to-person internet banking transfers suspended.

# Merchant payments and utility bills remain operational.

# Banks and MFS providers must monitor transactions and report suspicious activity.

While the move aims to protect election integrity, experts and citizens warn that it comes at the cost of ordinary people’s access to essential financial services, including medical payments, school fees, and household bills.

DHAKA, Feb 9, 2026 — Energy Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan stated on Sunday that international agreements, including the power purchase deal with India’s Adani Group, cannot be terminated arbitrarily.

He emphasized that any final decision regarding the controversial contract must be made by a future elected government through proper legal and diplomatic channels.

The remarks were made following a stakeholder consultation on the Integrated Energy and Power Sector Master Plan (IEPSMP) 2026–2050 at the Power Division headquarters.

Neutral Stance and Legal Scrutiny

Addressing growing public demand for the cancellation of the Adani deal, the Adviser noted that the interim administration has prioritized a neutral and independent position to avoid accusations of "witch-hunting."

Committee Report Finalized: A national committee tasked with reviewing unsolicited power deals signed under the previous regime has submitted its final report.

Evidence of Irregularities: Recent findings from the National Review Committee (NRC) suggest that the Adani deal was benchmarked against flawed local contracts, leading to significantly higher electricity costs—estimated at an additional $400–$500 million annually.

Arbitration Risks: Legal counsel has recommended potential international arbitration in Singapore; however, the Adviser clarified that the current administration will only provide the framework and evidence, leaving the execution to the next government.

The Renewable Energy Mandate

A key highlight of the consultation was the urgent need to transition toward renewable energy. Jalal Ahmed, Chairman of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), warned of severe trade implications if the country fails to green its power grid.

"If 42% of electricity in industrial sectors does not come from renewable sources by 2030, the European Union may impose trade restrictions," Ahmed warned.

This transition is particularly critical for the Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector, which accounts for over 80% of Bangladesh's export earnings. Industry experts noted that the EU’s upcoming Digital Product Passport (DPP) and sustainability regulations will make renewable energy a non-negotiable requirement for global market access.

Climate Goals and Coal Phase-out

Stakeholders at the meeting, including representatives from the Department of Environment and civil society, pushed for a complete exclusion of coal from the 2026–2050 Master Plan.

Net-Zero Alignment: Participants urged that the plan be strictly aligned with global net-zero carbon targets.

Economic Viability: While coal was once seen as a cheaper option, the hidden costs of transmission and environmental impact are making it less competitive compared to rapidly maturing solar and wind technologies.

Adviser Fouzul Kabir Khan concluded by stating that the current administration is focused on creating a transparent policy environment that protects national interests without compromising Bangladesh's reputation as a stable destination for foreign investment.

Dhaka, Feb 8, 2026: Bangladesh Bank has imposed temporary restrictions on mobile financial services (MFS) and certain internet banking transactions as part of efforts to curb the misuse of money during the 13th national parliamentary election.

The restrictions will come into force from midnight tonight and remain effective until 11:59 PM on February 12, the day of voting.

Under the directive, users of popular MFS platforms such as bKash, Rocket, and Nagad will be allowed to transfer a maximum of BDT 1,000 per transaction, with a daily cap of BDT 10,000.

The central bank said the limits aim to prevent unauthorized cash flows and vote-buying attempts during the election period.

In addition, person-to-person (P2P) fund transfers through internet banking and mobile banking apps will remain suspended throughout the restriction period. However, customers will still be able to make merchant payments and utility bill payments without disruption.

Bangladesh Bank has also instructed MFS operators to maintain heightened surveillance of all transactions. Any activity deemed suspicious or irregular must be reported immediately to local police authorities.

To ensure swift action, each service provider has been directed to form a dedicated emergency team to manage complaints and coordinate with law enforcement agencies.

The central bank further emphasized that all banks and MFS providers must work closely with the Election Commission and security agencies to enforce the measures effectively and ensure a fair and orderly election environment.

Dhaka, Feb 8, 2026: Adani has sent a renewed request to the Bangladesh government to settle outstanding electricity payments, warning that delays could affect coal imports and ongoing power generation.

According to sources, the Indian energy company asked the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) to pay $112.7 million, approximately 10,000 crore Indian rupees, to maintain uninterrupted electricity supply.

Background of the Payment Dispute

The payment dispute traces back to a 2017 agreement under which Adani was to supply 1,600 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh for 25 years.

Over the years, unpaid dues reportedly reached nearly $700 million. While partial payments were made during the interim government’s tenure, recent months have seen slower settlements, complicating the situation.

Government Response and Payment Plans

BPDB Chairman Rezaul Karim stated that revenue collection constraints have affected the pace of payments but confirmed that a plan exists to resume regular settlements, with increased payments expected from March.

Previous Review of Energy Contracts

A six-member government committee, led by a retired High Court judge, had earlier reviewed energy contracts signed under previous administrations.

The report flagged the Adani agreement as financially burdensome, noting significant annual costs to Bangladesh.

Despite these findings, Adani highlighted that electricity supply has not been interrupted, even with substantial pending payments.

Implications for Cross-Border Energy Agreements

The dispute underscores the challenges of cross-border energy agreements and the importance of timely settlements to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

The Election Commission (EC) has emphasized that the halt in campaigning is mandatory, in line with the law requiring a 48-hour suspension before voting begins.

Activities such as rallies, public meetings, processions, distribution of campaign materials, and media promotions will be strictly prohibited after the deadline.

Voting will take place nationwide from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm on election day. The process will use paper ballots and transparent ballot boxes to ensure transparency and fairness.

This year, the election will be held in 299 constituencies, reduced by one due to the postponement of voting in Sherpur-3 following the death of a candidate.

HABIGANJ, Feb 7 — Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman on Saturday said Bangladesh must not be divided along religious lines, stating that intolerance in the name of religion goes against Islamic values and the country’s long-standing tradition of coexistence.

Speaking at a public gathering held at the Government High School ground in Habiganj town, he said people of different faiths have lived together in Bangladesh for centuries.

“Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians have shared this land for generations, and no genuine religious person can support harming others,” he said.

The rally was chaired by Habiganj district Jamaat Ameer Maulana Mukhlishur Rahman. Criticising hereditary political practices, Shafiqur Rahman said Jamaat-e-Islami seeks to introduce a merit-based political system.

“We want to change the culture where leadership is inherited. A capable child of a common worker should have the opportunity to lead the country,” he said.

He accused established political parties of engaging with voters only during election periods.

“They arrive with promises and development claims before elections, but disappear once voting is over,” he said.

Referring to Bangladesh’s development challenges, the Jamaat leader said the country has had sufficient time since independence to ensure public safety and economic progress, but corruption and extortion continue to affect daily life.

He pointed out that Vietnam, which became independent later, has now emerged as a regional example of development.

He said Bangladeshis play a major role in strengthening foreign economies through hard work abroad, yet ordinary citizens continue to suffer at home due to what he described as ineffective and unethical leadership.

Shafiqur Rahman said Jamaat-e-Islami has entered the electoral arena with commitments to restore good governance.

“If Jamaat comes to power, extortion will be curbed, businesses will operate without fear, street vendors will not face harassment, and corrupt practices will not be tolerated,” he said.

Leaders from Jamaat-e-Islami, Khelafat Majlish and the 11-party alliance also spoke at the rally, including Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair, Khelafat Majlish Ameer and Habiganj-2 candidate Abdul Basit, the party’s Secretary General and Habiganj-4 candidate Ahmad Abdul Qadir, and Habiganj-1 candidate Sirajul Islam.

DHAKA, Feb 7, 2026: In a move that has recalibrated the Bangladeshi political landscape, BNP chief Tarique Rahman has flatly rejected a power-sharing deal with Islamist rivals ahead of the February 12 polls.

Speaking to Reuters, Rahman signaled that his party is eyeing a landslide victory, aiming to govern alone to ensure a healthy democratic balance.

"If I form a government with my opponents, who is left to hold us accountable?" Rahman asked, marking a sharp departure from the coalition politics of the past.

As Bangladesh inches toward its most consequential election in decades on February 12, Tarique Rahman, the chief of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has sent a clear message to both domestic allies and international observers: the era of "unity coalitions" may be over.

In a recent conversation with Reuters, Rahman distanced himself from his former partner, Jamaat-e-Islami, signaling that he intends to lead a government that stands on its own mandate rather than a shared platform with Islamist forces.

Defining the Democratic Space

The rejection of a "unity government" is a strategic pivot for Rahman. Historically, the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami were seen as a formidable duo against the now-ousted Awami League.

However, Rahman’s current vision emphasizes the necessity of a functioning opposition for a healthy democracy.

"If we govern together with our main rivals, we effectively eliminate the opposition," Rahman explained. "For the sake of our democratic health, I would rather see a strong, constructive opposition in Parliament."

Key Pillars of the 2026 Campaign

With the Awami League currently barred from the polls, the election has become a "bipolar contest" between the BNP and a rising Jamaat-led alliance.

To secure a majority, Rahman is focusing on a reformist agenda designed to appeal to the "Gen-Z" voters who led the 2024 uprising.

The "Family Card" Initiative: A pledge to provide direct social safety nets for housewives and low-income families.

Youth Employment: Promises to modernize the economy through vocational and IT training to create high-paying jobs both at home and abroad.

Judicial Reform: A commitment to a justice-based society where political rivalries do not lead to state-sponsored persecution.

Diplomacy: A "Bangladesh First" Approach

Rahman’s foreign policy stance appears to be one of "strategic neutrality." While the previous regime's ties with India have been strained following Sheikh Hasina's move to New Delhi, Rahman insists his government will prioritize economic partnerships based on the country's national interests.

He noted that Bangladesh is open to any nation—be it India, China, or Western powers—that offers "suitable proposals" to accelerate economic growth while respecting Bangladeshi sovereignty.

A Changed Leader? After 17 years in London, analysts suggest the "Prince of Bangladesh politics" has returned with a more tempered and inclusive approach.

By welcoming anyone—even the children of his rivals—to participate in politics if the public accepts them, Rahman is attempting to position the BNP as a centrist force of reconciliation.

As the nation prepares for the February 12 vote, the question remains: Can the BNP maintain its narrow lead over the 11-party Islamist alliance without the help of a coalition?

Dhaka, Feb 7, 2026: Bangladesh pace bowler Mustafizur Rahman has secured a return to the Pakistan Super League after Lahore Qalandars confirmed his inclusion for the tournament’s 11th season through a direct overseas signing.

According to the franchise, the defending champions invested PKR 64.4 million to bring back the left-arm pacer, marking his first PSL appearance in several years.

Lahore Qalandars Welcome Familiar Face

The Lahore-based franchise announced the signing on Thursday via its official social media channels, describing Mustafizur as a returning member of the Qalandars family. The Bangladeshi international previously represented the side during the 2016 and 2018 editions of the league.

Under the revised player recruitment framework for PSL 11, teams are allowed one direct signing of an overseas player who did not feature in the previous season. Lahore Qalandars exercised that option to secure Mustafizur ahead of the upcoming auction.

PSL Entry Follows IPL Release

Mustafizur registered for the PSL in early January after being released by Indian Premier League franchise Kolkata Knight Riders. He had been purchased by KKR for INR 9.20 crore at the IPL mini-auction in December.

However, his contract was later terminated following instructions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Broader diplomatic and sporting developments between Bangladesh and India subsequently influenced his availability for the IPL season.

Previous PSL Experience

Despite being signed by Lahore Qalandars on two earlier occasions, Mustafizur featured in only one full PSL campaign. During the 2018 season, he played five matches, picking up four wickets at an economy rate of 6.43.

Widely regarded for his deceptive cutters and effectiveness in the final overs, the 30-year-old adds experience and variety to Lahore’s pace attack.

Defending Champions Strengthen Squad

Lahore Qalandars enter PSL 11 as one of the most successful franchises in the league’s history, having lifted the trophy three times. In the previous season, Bangladeshi leg-spinner Rishad Hossain also contributed significantly, claiming 13 wickets in seven matches for the side.

Structural Overhaul in PSL 11

The upcoming edition of the Pakistan Super League will feature major organizational changes. The long-standing draft system has been replaced by a full auction format, while the player salary cap has been raised to $1.6 million per franchise.

The tournament will also expand from six to eight teams, with Faisalabad returning as a host city alongside Karachi, Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi.

Tournament Timeline

PSL 11 is scheduled to begin in late March, with the official player auction set to take place next Wednesday.

DHAKA, Feb 7, 2026: In a match that will be remembered for its heart-stopping finish, Nurul Hasan Sohan delivered a masterclass in power hitting to lead Durbar XI to a thrilling two-wicket win over Dhumketu XI. The encounter, held on Friday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, marked the second fixture of the Odommo Bangladesh T20 Cup.

A Game of Two Halves

Chasing a target of 157, Durbar XI’s hopes appeared to vanish after a catastrophic middle-order collapse. By the 14th over, the team was reeling at 81 for six, with the required run rate climbing rapidly.

However, Sohan—who has faced significant scrutiny following a lackluster BPL season—stepped up when it mattered most. His explosive 76 off 44 deliveries single-handedly shifted the momentum back toward his side.

The 19th-Over Miracle

The tension reached its peak in the final two overs. With Durbar XI needing 33 runs from just 12 balls, the odds were heavily stacked against them. Facing pacer Shoriful Islam, Sohan unleashed a barrage of boundaries:

# Four towering sixes in a single over. # 26 runs accumulated in just six deliveries. # The equation was slashed to a manageable 7 runs from the final over.

The drama continued into the 20th over as Sohan was tragically run out on the second ball. Despite the loss of their set batsman, Hasan Mahmud maintained his composure, striking a boundary off Mukidul Islam Mugdho to secure the win with three balls to spare.

Statistical Highlights:
Redemption on the Big Stage

For Sohan, this performance serves as a vital career reboot. After a difficult run in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) where he managed a mere 49 runs over eight games, this "redemption" innings has silenced critics and re-established him as one of the country's premier finishers. Earlier, Dhumketu XI’s total of 156/8 was built on the back of skipper Litton Das's 43 and a late-inning flourish from Mahedi Hasan. Mahedi was also the standout performer with the ball, finishing with extraordinary figures of 4 for 11, though it wasn't enough to stop the Sohan storm.

What’s Next?

While Dhumketu XI remains at the top of the table due to a superior net run rate, the tournament remains wide open. All eyes now turn to Saturday’s final league clash, where Duronto must secure a win against the resurgent Durbar XI to keep their championship dreams alive.

Dhaka, Feb 6, 2026: In a move set to redefine South Asian trade dynamics, Bangladesh and Japan officially signed a historic Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) on Friday.

This milestone marks Bangladesh’s first-ever comprehensive trade deal, aimed at protecting its export growth as the nation prepares to graduate from the Least Developed Country (LDC) category later this year.

The agreement was signed in Tokyo by Bangladesh’s Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin and Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Horii Iwao. The ceremony was attended by high-ranking diplomats, including Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Japan Md Daud Ali and Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Saida Shinichi.

Unlocking the Japanese Market: 7,300+ Products to Go Duty-Free

The centerpiece of the EPA is the massive expansion of market access. Under the deal, approximately 7,379 Bangladeshi products will enjoy 100% duty-free entry into Japan.

A critical victory for Bangladesh is the inclusion of the "single-stage transformation" rule for the Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector. The Change: Previously, exporters faced complex "rules of origin" that required multiple stages of production to occur within Bangladesh.

The Benefit: Now, apparel manufacturers can qualify for duty-free access even if they use globally sourced fabrics, provided the final sewing is completed in Bangladesh.

In exchange, Bangladesh will gradually open its doors to 1,039 Japanese products, offering them preferential tariff treatment over several years to prevent sudden revenue shocks.

A Strategic "Lifeline" for LDC Graduation Trade analysts describe the EPA as a strategic "lifeline." When Bangladesh graduates from LDC status in November 2026, it risks losing many existing trade preferences. This binding agreement ensures that duty-free access remains permanent, providing the predictability required by international investors.

Beyond Goods: Opportunities for Professionals The EPA isn’t just about shipping containers; it’s about people. The deal opens 120 service sub-sectors for Bangladeshi professionals, creating new pathways in:

# Information Technology (IT) and Engineering

# Education and Healthcare

# Caregiving and Nursing

Conversely, Bangladesh has committed to opening 98 sub-sectors for Japanese participation, paving the way for advanced Japanese technology in local manufacturing, logistics, and energy.

The Path to the Agreement

The journey to this historic Friday began with seven rigorous rounds of negotiations spanning political shifts in Dhaka. Originally initiated by a joint study group in 2023, the talks were briefly paused during the political transitions of August 2024 but were fast-tracked by the current interim government to meet a one-year completion target.

"This is more than just a commercial pact," stated Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin. "It is a reflection of the deep mutual trust and the long-standing friendship between our two nations."

With the world’s fourth-largest economy now a formal partner, Bangladesh is poised to attract significant Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and enhance its global industrial competitiveness.

Gazi Moniruzzaman, Khulna, February 6, 2026: Authorities have prepared a long-term eco-tourism master plan aimed at preserving the Sundarbans while responsibly expanding tourism activities in the UNESCO-listed mangrove forest.

The Sundarbans Eco-Tourism Master Plan (2025–2045) sets out a framework for increasing both local and international visitors without compromising the forest’s fragile ecosystem.

Long-Term Planning with Tk 410 Crore Investment

The master plan proposes an estimated investment of Tk 410 crore, according to Dr Md Wasiul Islam, Deputy Chief of Party of the initiative and a professor at the Forestry and Wood Technology Discipline of Khulna University.

He said the plan is designed as a long-term strategy rather than a short-term tourism project, focusing on environmental protection alongside economic development.

Stakeholder-Driven and Community-Oriented Model

Dr Wasiul Islam said the plan was developed through consultations with a wide range of stakeholders, including government agencies, academic institutions, law enforcement bodies, port authorities, tour operators, and residents of Sundarbans-adjacent areas. A community-oriented eco-tourism model forms the foundation of the plan, ensuring local participation and shared benefits.

Foreign Visitors Seen as Key to Economic Returns

The blueprint places special emphasis on attracting international tourists in order to increase foreign exchange earnings. Dr Wasiul Islam explained that while domestic tourism supports local circulation of money, international tourism introduces new revenue into the national economy, contributing to long-term economic stability and growth.

Environmental Conservation Takes Priority

Unlike conventional tourism projects that rely heavily on infrastructure expansion, the master plan prioritises conservation and sustainable practices.

Developed over nearly two years, it includes a detailed technical roadmap aimed at protecting biodiversity while allowing controlled tourism growth.

Project officials believe the approach will help strengthen conservation efforts, expand the tourism sector, and create durable economic opportunities for communities living near the forest.

USAID Support and Institutional Collaboration

The initiative is funded by the American people and supported financially and technically by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The Bangladesh Forest Department is implementing the project in partnership with Solimar International under the USAID Eco-Tourism Activity Pilot Project.

Alternative Livelihoods to Reduce Forest Dependence

The master plan seeks to reduce local dependence on forest resources by promoting tourism-based alternative livelihoods. Community involvement during the planning stage is expected to minimise conflict and ensure social, cultural, economic, and environmental benefits for local residents.

Eco-Guides and Disaster Preparedness Measures As part of the initiative, more than 200 eco-guides have already been trained to manage tourist movement, reduce human-wildlife conflict, and improve visitor safety. The plan also aims to strengthen the Sundarbans’ resilience to natural disasters such as cyclones and tidal surges by easing pressure on the ecosystem.

Forest Officials Stress Need for Responsible Tourism

Md Imran Ahmed, Conservator of Forests of the Khulna Circle, said the Sundarbans receives around 200,000 visitors each year. He noted that managing such numbers while ensuring environmental protection and effective waste management remains a major challenge.

He described the master plan as a timely initiative that promotes responsible eco-tourism and is currently awaiting approval from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

Tour Operators Call for Better Facilities

Tour operators have welcomed the initiative but highlighted longstanding infrastructure challenges. Nazmul Azam David, General Secretary of the Tour Operators Association of the Sundarbans (TOAS) and Managing Director of Rupantar Eco-Tourism, said basic facilities such as emergency medical care, safe accommodation, clean drinking water, and security remain inadequate.

He also pointed out that several watchtowers and jetties inside the forest are in poor condition, underscoring the need for planned and sustainable improvements.

DHAKA, Feb 6, 2026: Protests in the capital took a violent turn on Friday afternoon as activists from the Inqilab Mancha clashed with police while attempting to march toward "Jamuna," the official residence of the Chief Adviser. The group’s member secretary, Abdullah Al Jaber, was among several individuals rushed to the hospital following the confrontation.

Escalation at InterContinental Intersection

The incident occurred around 3:50 PM near the Hotel InterContinental. Members of Inqilab Mancha had gathered to demand a UN-led investigation into the death of Shahid Sharif Osman Bin Hadi.

According to witnesses, the situation escalated when demonstrators attempted to breach police barricades to reach the Chief Adviser’s residence. Law enforcement responded with:

# Water cannons

# Tear gas

# Sound grenades

In response, some protesters reportedly threw brickbats at the police. The chaos resulted in multiple injuries, with victims suffering from the effects of tear gas and splinters from sound grenades.

Conflicting Reports on Injuries

While social media posts from the organization claimed that Abdullah Al Jaber had been "shot," medical authorities provided a different account.

Md. Faruk, the Inspector in charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost, confirmed that while Jaber and two others were receiving treatment, none of them sustained gunshot wounds.

Witnesses at the scene estimated that approximately 20 people were taken to various medical facilities for treatment following the scuffle. Other high-profile student leaders reported at the scene included:

# Fatema Tasnim Juma (DUCSU)

# Shanta Akter (JCSU)

# Salahuddin Ammar (RUCSU)

Context of the Unrest

The Inqilab Mancha had been holding a sit-in since Thursday evening. Their protest coincided with a separate demonstration by government employees seeking the implementation of the 9th Pay Scale.

Earlier in the day, police had already moved to disperse the pay scale protesters, creating a high-pressure environment around the high-security zone.

Following the afternoon clash, Inqilab Mancha activists retreated toward Shahbagh. The organization later used social media to call for a mass gathering at the Raju Memorial Sculpture at Dhaka University to protest the police action.

Dhaka, Feb 6, 2026: Ahead of the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has officially unveiled its election manifesto, highlighting nine core pledges aimed at social welfare, economic stability, and systemic reform.

The manifesto was announced on Friday afternoon at a formal ceremony held at the Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka. The party described the document not just as a list of campaign promises, but as a "new social and state contract" centered on the rights of citizens rather than the pursuit of power.

Key Highlights: The 9 Major Pledges

1. The 'Family Card' for Social Safety To protect marginalized and low-income families, BNP has pledged to introduce a "Family Card." Under this initiative, eligible households will receive 2,500 BDT per month or an equivalent amount in essential commodities. The party aims to increase this financial support gradually. 2. 'Farmer Cards' and Agricultural Support

To ensure fair prices for agricultural produce, the party will launch "Farmer Cards." This scheme will provide subsidies, easy access to credit, and crop insurance. It will also extend to fish farmers, livestock owners, and small-scale agricultural entrepreneurs.

3. Healthcare Revolution

BNP aims to build a corruption-free healthcare system by recruiting 100,000 healthcare workers nationwide. The plan includes expanding quality medical services to district and metropolitan levels, with a specific focus on maternal and child health.

4. Modern and Skills-Based Education

The manifesto promises a skill-based education policy. Key features include:

Maximum priority on primary education.

Technical and technological support for teachers and students.

The introduction of "Mid-day Meals" in schools.

5. Youth Employment and Global Integration

To secure the future of the younger generation, the party plans to:

Foster job creation and language skill development.

Provide support for startups and entrepreneurs.

Facilitate integration into global e-commerce platforms and ensure merit-based government recruitment.

6. Sports as a Career

BNP intends to promote sports as a viable profession by expanding infrastructure and training facilities at the district and upazila levels.

7. Environmental Protection and River Restoration A major environmental push is planned, involving:

Excavation and re-excavation of 10,000 kilometers of rivers and canals.

Planting 150 million trees over five years. Implementing modern waste management systems through public participation. 8. Religious Harmony and Welfare To strengthen social ties, the party will introduce a welfare system for religious leaders of all faiths, providing them with honorariums and training-based support.

9. Digital Economy and PayPal Integration

To boost the digital economy, the BNP has committed to bringing the international payment gateway PayPal to Bangladesh. The plan also includes establishing regional e-commerce hubs and expanding the export of "Made in Bangladesh" products.

A Vision for a New Bangladesh

The BNP leadership emphasized that their governance would be defined by "justice over revenge" and "production over looting." The party promised to restore the dignity of the vote and ensure that no individual is above the law.

The manifesto concludes with a vision of a nation where every citizen can proudly declare, "Bangladesh First."

Dhaka, Feb 5, 2026: The interim government is expected to transfer power to the newly elected administration as quickly as possible after the national election, and the process is unlikely to extend beyond February 17 or 18, according to the press secretary to the Chief Adviser.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday afternoon at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said preparations are underway to ensure a swift and orderly transition following the polls.

The briefing followed a meeting of the Advisory Council, chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.

Election on February 12

Voting for the 13th National Parliamentary Election is scheduled for February 12. On the same day, a referendum on the implementation of the July National Charter will also be held.

Shafiqul Alam said the interim administration aims to complete the handover at the earliest possible time once the election process concludes.

“If the elected members of parliament are sworn in within three days, the leader of the majority party could then be invited to take the oath as prime minister,” he said. “This could happen by February 15 or 16. We do not expect the transition to go beyond February 17 or 18.”

Commitment to Quick Transition

Deputy Press Secretary Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, who was also present at the briefing, reiterated that the interim government remains committed to transferring authority to the elected representatives without unnecessary delay.

He noted that this position had already been communicated publicly earlier.

Oath-Taking of MPs Under Discussion

Earlier in the day, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul addressed reporters at the Secretariat regarding the oath-taking process for newly elected lawmakers.

He said the matter is currently under policy-level consideration and that no final decision has yet been made.

“There are two possible options,” Asif Nazrul explained. “One is that a person nominated by the President could administer the oath, possibly the Chief Justice. If that does not happen, the Chief Election Commissioner could conduct the oath-taking. However, that option may involve a waiting period of three days, which we would prefer to avoid.”

He added that the government wants to ensure the oath-taking and transition process is completed as soon as possible after the election.

Dhaka, Feb 5, 2026: A Dhaka court has granted bail to Mohammad Sarwar-e-Alam, an assistant programmer at the Bangabhaban ICT section, following his arrest for the alleged hacking of Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman's X (formerly Twitter) account.

The decision was delivered on Thursday by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Junaid. The legal proceedings have drawn significant attention due to the high-profile nature of the victim and the suspect’s employment at the President’s official residence.

Key Legal ArgumentsDuring the hearing, the court heard conflicting narratives from the defense and the prosecution:

The Defense: Counsel Md. Alamgir requested bail on any condition, arguing that Alam—a veteran employee with 32 years of service—was a victim of "political circumstances." He maintained that his client had no motive to jeopardize his career and pension so close to retirement.

The Prosecution: Lawyers representing the Jamaat leader opposed the bail, claiming that forensic evidence from Alam's mobile phone suggested involvement. They alleged the hack was a deliberate attempt to create social instability ahead of the national elections.

The judge eventually granted bail upon a Tk 5,000 bond after the suspect personally addressed the court, claiming "100 percent innocence" and noting that he had voluntarily surrendered his devices to investigators.

Summary of the Cyberattack:

The case stems from an incident on January 31, when an "objectionable and misogynistic" post was published on the Jamaat Ameer's verified X handle. The post sparked immediate controversy and was later disavowed by the party as a result of a cyberattack.

Timeline of Events: Date,Event

Jan 31,Derogatory post appeared on Dr. Shafiqur Rahman’s X account. Feb 1,Jamaat filed a General Diary (GD) claiming the account was hacked via a phishing email. Feb 3,Sarwar-e-Alam was detained from his Rajarbagh government residence. Feb 4,"Formal charges were filed under the Cyber Security Ordinance, and Alam was shown arrested." Feb 5,Dhaka court granted bail to the accused.

Investigation Details:

The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) stated earlier that they found "initial evidence" linking the hacking attempt to a government-affiliated email address.

The party's ICT cell alleged that a phishing link was sent from an address associated with the assistant programmer’s office. While the court has allowed Alam to return home, law enforcement confirmed that forensic examinations of the seized laptops and mobile phones are still underway to identify any other individuals involved in the breach.

DHAKA — A technical officer serving at the President’s Office (Bangabhaban) remains in the custody of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) as investigators scramble to verify claims of a high-profile cyberattack on the leadership of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Mohammad Sarowar Alam, an assistant programmer, was picked up by detectives at midnight on Tuesday from his residence in the Rajarbagh area. While he has been under interrogation for nearly 20 hours, law enforcement officials stated Wednesday evening that no formal charges have yet been filed.

The Incident: A Post That Sparked Outrage

The controversy erupted on Saturday afternoon when a post appeared on the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman.

The statement—written in English—characterized women’s participation in the modern workforce as a catalyst for "moral decay" and "insecurity," even comparing such professional engagement to "prostitution."

The post triggered immediate condemnation from civil society, women’s rights groups, and political rivals, including the BNP, who labeled the remarks as "misogynistic" and "humiliating to working women."

The "Phishing" Defense

In a swift damage-control move, Jamaat-e-Islami held an emergency press conference at its Moghbazar headquarters. The party’s IT specialists presented a technical walkthrough, claiming:

The Breach: A malicious file disguised as "election-related data" was sent to the party's email.

The Source: The email allegedly originated from assistantprogrammer@bangabhaban.gov.bd, the official government account of Sarowar Alam.

The Target: Once the file was opened, the X accounts of the Ameer and several other senior leaders were purportedly compromised.

The Investigation: Was the Official Framed?

The Detective Branch is now investigating whether Sarowar Alam was the perpetrator or a victim. An anonymous DB source indicated that preliminary digital forensics suggests Alam’s own government email may have been compromised earlier. This raises the possibility that a third-party hacker used the prestigious .gov.bd domain to lend credibility to the phishing attempt.

"His laptop and mobile are being analyzed," said Additional Commissioner (DB) Shafiul Islam. "We are proceeding with caution before making a final decision on his involvement."
