Tarique Rahman to Lead as Bangladesh Swears in Newly Elected Government

Bangladesh is set to witness the formal inauguration of its newly elected government today, marking a significant political transition following last year’s mass uprising.

The swearing-in of Members of Parliament will take place in the morning, followed by the oath of the new cabinet in the afternoon, with Tarique Rahman expected to assume office as Prime Minister.

According to the National Parliament Secretariat, lawmakers and members of the Constitutional Reform Council will take their oath at 10:00 a.m., while the cabinet will be sworn in at 4:00 p.m.

In a symbolic break from tradition, the cabinet oath ceremony will be held at the South Plaza of the National Parliament building instead of the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban, reflecting a new political beginning.

Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin will administer the oath to Members of Parliament, and President Mohammad Shahabuddin will swear in the cabinet members.

Approximately 1,200 local and international guests, including representatives from South Asian countries such as India and Pakistan, are expected to attend the ceremonies.

Focus Shifts to Cabinet Formation

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured 209 out of 299 contested seats in the 13th National Parliamentary Election, giving it an absolute majority.

With Tarique Rahman poised to become Prime Minister for the first time, nationwide attention is now on the composition of his cabinet.

Party insiders indicate the new cabinet will combine senior political figures with emerging leaders, while advisers and specialists from administration, international development, and technology sectors may also be included.

Leadership has emphasized regional balance, inclusion of women lawmakers, and representation from minority communities.
