The government of Bangladesh has conferred the prestigious Ekushey Padak 2026 to nine individuals and one cultural organization in recognition of outstanding contributions across arts, culture, journalism, education and social development.
The awards were formally presented by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman during a ceremony held Thursday afternoon at Osmani Memorial Auditorium.
The Ekushey Padak is the country’s second highest civilian honour and has been awarded annually since 1976 in memory of the martyrs of the Bengali Language Movement. The award recognizes exceptional achievements in fields such as literature, arts, education, research and social service.
This year’s recipients include noted film actress Farida Akhtar Bobita for her contribution to cinema, and art scholar Md. Abdus Sattar for excellence in fine arts. Internationally recognized architect Marina Tabassum received the award in the architecture category.
Legendary rock musician Ayub Bachchu was honoured posthumously for his lasting influence on Bangladeshi music. In addition, dancer Arthi Ahmed and traditional folk performer Islam Uddin Palakar were recognized for their contributions to performing arts.
In journalism, veteran media personality Shafiq Rehman received the award for a lifelong career marked by professional courage and dedication.
The education category honour was awarded to Mahbubul Alam Majumdar, while sculptor Tejash Haldar Joss was recognized for achievements in sculpture.
For the first time, a musical band was included among the awardees as Warfaze received the honour for its contribution to Bangladesh’s music industry.
The prime minister congratulated the recipients and expressed hope that their achievements would inspire younger generations to pursue creativity, patriotism and excellence in their respective fields. After the ceremony, he was expected to attend the inauguration of the historic Ekushey Book Fair later in the day.
