Dhaka, Bangladesh: A Dhaka court has granted a six-day remand for the domestic worker, Ayesha, and a three-day remand for her husband, Rabbi Shikder, in connection with the murder of a mother and daughter in the capital's Mohammadpur area.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam issued the order on Thursday after a hearing.
Prosecuting lawyer Kayyum Hossain Nayan stated that the investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector (SI) Sahidul Osman Masum of Mohammadpur Police Station, requested a 10-day remand for both accused when they were presented in court. The prosecution argued in favor of the remand, while the accused were unrepresented by a lawyer. Following the hearing, the court approved Ayesha’s six-day and Rabbi's three-day remand.
The Crime and Arrest
The victims were identified as the mother, Laila Afroza (48), and her daughter, Nafisa Nawal Binte Aziz (15). The double murder took place on Monday morning.
Laila’s husband, A J M Azizul Islam, filed a murder case against the domestic worker at Mohammadpur Police Station that same night. The complaint indicates the murders occurred sometime between 7:51 AM and 9:35 AM on Monday.
The court heard that the domestic worker had only been employed at the residence for four days prior to the incident, and she routinely entered and exited the building while wearing a burqa or with her face covered.
CCTV footage from the building reportedly shows the domestic worker entering in a burqa on the day of the crime. However, when she left, she was seen wearing the school uniform belonging to the deceased daughter, Nafisa.
Police apprehended Ayesha and her husband, Rabbi, on Wednesday from Nalchity Upazila in Jhalakathi district.
Police Statement on the Murder
Following the arrests, police provided details about the sequence of events. They stated that the homeowner, Laila, caught Ayesha attempting to flee with stolen goods. When Laila threatened to call the police, Ayesha reportedly became enraged and stabbed her. When Nafisa intervened to save her mother, she was also fatally stabbed.
After killing both mother and daughter with multiple stabs, Ayesha allegedly went to the bathroom to take a shower before changing into Nafisa's school uniform and escaping the scene.
