WASHINGTON D.C. — Federal authorities are investigating a deadly exchange of gunfire that occurred near the White House on Saturday evening.
A security checkpoint at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW became the scene of a brief but intense confrontation when a gunman opened fire on U.S. Secret Service personnel.

Shortly after 6:00 p.m., an individual approached the perimeter, drew a firearm from his bag, and began discharging rounds toward the security post.
The suspect was struck during the exchange and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Law enforcement officials have identified the deceased as 21-year-old Nasire Best.
In July 2025, Best was apprehended for attempting to gain unauthorized access to a different White House security perimeter.
