Ceasefire on the Brink: Trump Eyes Resumption of Air Campaign as Iran Talks Stall

WASHINGTON / ISLAMABAD — April 21, 2026

The diplomatic window to prevent a renewed outbreak of full-scale war is rapidly closing. With the bilateral ceasefire between the United States and Iran set to expire at 04:50 PKT Wednesday, President Donald Trump has adopted a combative stance, signaling that the U.S. military is fully prepared to resume its air campaign against Iranian targets.

Military Readiness and Nuclear Recovery

In a morning interview with CNBC, President Trump revealed that the U.S. has used the two-week pause to replenish its "missile inventory" and is now in a superior tactical position. He dismissed the idea of being under pressure to reach a deal, instead emphasizing that he "expects to be bombing" as a matter of strategic leverage.

A significant point of contention remains the recovery of enriched uranium. Trump described the aftermath of "Operation Midnight Hammer"—the strikes on Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan—as a scene of total destruction, noting that extracting nuclear materials from the heavy debris will be a "long and difficult process."

Intel Alert: The China-Russia Factor

U.S. intelligence agencies have moved to "high alert" following evidence of sophisticated military hardware flowing into Iran from Beijing and Moscow. Former CIA officials highlight the discovery of advanced MANPADS (shoulder-fired missiles) and drone components that may have been used to down a U.S. F-15E fighter jet earlier this month.

The White House is now using its naval blockade not just to stop oil, but to intercept what Trump termed "gifts from China"—referring to a cargo ship interdicted by the U.S. Navy on Monday.

Diplomatic Vacuum in Islamabad

While Washington remains in a "wait and see" mode, the physical site for negotiations in Pakistan remains empty.

  • Vance Delay: Vice President JD Vance, originally scheduled to depart for Islamabad, remained at the White House on Tuesday for urgent policy meetings.

  • Iran’s Silence: Pakistan’s Information Minister confirmed that despite "sincere efforts" to mediate, Tehran has yet to formally confirm a delegation for the second round of talks.

Ethical Outcry over Negotiations

The talks are also facing domestic backlash. Dan Levinson, son of the late CIA contractor Robert Levinson, appeared on national television to condemn the inclusion of Iranian Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam in the peace process. Levinson identified the diplomat as one of the figures tied to his father’s 2007 disappearance, calling his presence at the table a "slap in the face" to American families.
