West Bank: EU and UK Condemn "Unacceptable" Rise in Settler Attacks During Regional Conflict

As regional tensions escalate following the outbreak of war between Israel and Iran, the international community has turned its focus toward a surge in violence within the occupied West Bank.

Both the European Union and the United Kingdom issued formal demands this week for Israeli authorities to intervene as reports of settler-led attacks on Palestinian communities reach a critical level.

According to United Nations monitors, at least six Palestinians have been killed in the territory over the past 11 days. The British Consulate-General in Jerusalem expressed "apprehension" over the loss of life, while the EU warned that the lack of accountability for these acts risks triggering further cycles of violence.

Targeted Raids and Fatalities

The village of Khirbet Abu Falah, located northeast of Ramallah, became the site of a deadly confrontation early Sunday. Witnesses described a pre-dawn raid by dozens of settlers that turned fatal when armed individuals opened fire on residents.

The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed the deaths of:

  • Thaer Hamayel (24) and Farea Hamayel (57): Both cousins were killed by gunshot wounds to the head.

  • Mohammed Murra (55): Suffered a fatal cardiac arrest after inhaling tear gas during the security intervention.

In the South Hebron Hills, 28-year-old Amir Shanaran was killed on Saturday during a confrontation in Wadi al-Rakhim. Local officials reported that settlers entered Palestinian homes and assaulted members of the Shanaran family.

A Pattern of Escalation

The Israeli rights group Yesh Din has documented 109 separate incidents of settler violence—including shootings, physical assaults, and property damage—since the start of the war with Iran. The group warned that these actions appear to be aimed at the "forcible displacement" of Palestinian communities.

Palestinian Authority Vice-President Hussein al-Sheikh called the developments a "major escalation of settler terrorism," urging the international community to take punitive measures to ensure the safety of civilians.

Military and Diplomatic Response

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have responded with uncharacteristically sharp language. Maj. Gen. Avi Bluth, head of the IDF’s Central Command, vowed "zero tolerance" for vigilante justice.

"We are working with all security agencies to quickly reach those responsible," Bluth stated. He emphasized that internal instability only serves to undermine the military's primary focus on external threats from Iran and Hezbollah.

The UK and EU have reiterated that the 160 Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem are illegal under international law. They are calling on the Israeli government to fulfill its obligations to protect the 3.3 million Palestinians living in the territory.
