Trump Extends Iran Strike Pause to 10 Days; Cites "Ongoing" Negotiations Over 15-Point Peace Plan

President Donald Trump has officially extended the temporary moratorium on U.S. military strikes against Iranian energy and power infrastructure, pushing the deadline to Monday, April 6, 2026, at 8:00 PM ET.

The President announced the extension via Truth Social on Thursday, stating the move was made "as per Iranian Government request."

While Trump expressed optimism, characterizing the talks as going "very well," the situation on the ground remains volatile. Even as the "energy pause" holds, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have intensified strikes on Iranian military production facilities, and Tehran continues to enforce a near-total digital blackout within its borders.

The Diplomatic Front: The 15-Point Ultimatum

At a recent White House cabinet meeting, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed that a detailed 15-point peace proposal has been delivered to Tehran through intermediaries in Pakistan and Egypt.

The plan, described by analysts as a "maximalist" framework, reportedly demands:

  • Nuclear Neutralization: The total decommissioning of the Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan facilities.

  • Maritime Access: The permanent reopening of the Strait of Hormuz as a free maritime zone.

  • Proxy Cessation: A verified end to the funding and arming of groups such as Hezbollah and the Houthis.

  • Missile Caps: Strict limitations on the range and quantity of Iran’s ballistic missile arsenal.

In exchange, the U.S. has offered a "Marshall Plan" style economic package and the lifting of all primary nuclear sanctions. However, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has publicly dismissed the plan as "one-sided," countering with demands for war reparations and the closure of U.S. bases in the Persian Gulf.

The "Hormuz Present" and Market Reaction

A significant development in the "shadow diplomacy" was the recent passage of 10 oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump described this as a "present" from Tehran to demonstrate their seriousness in the talks.

The news of the 10-day extension and the tanker movement provided a brief reprieve for global energy markets. Brent crude, which had been climbing toward $110, dropped by approximately $1 per barrel following the announcement.

However, market analysts warn that prices remain sensitive to the April 6 deadline, as a failure in talks could trigger immediate strikes on Iran's critical oil export hubs like Kharg Island.

Escalation Amidst the Pause

Despite the pause on energy targets, the military conflict has not ceased:

  • IDF Strikes on Tehran: On Wednesday, the IDF launched a "wide-scale wave" of strikes targeting government infrastructure and naval missile production sites in the heart of the Iranian capital.

  • Regional Toll: In Abu Dhabi, two civilians (an Indian and a Pakistani national) were killed by falling debris from an intercepted Iranian missile.

  • The Digital Siege: Inside Iran, the government has intensified its crackdown on Starlink users to maintain a near-total internet blackout. Connectivity has dropped to 1% of normal levels, and authorities recently froze 61 bank accounts in Yazd province linked to "unauthorized connectivity."

Analysis: A Window of Opportunity or Strategic Reset?

While President Trump claims the U.S. is "not desperate" for a deal, the 10-day window is widely seen as a final diplomatic push before a potential major ground or air escalation.

Former envoys suggest the pause may be a strategic reset, allowing the U.S. to reposition elite Marine units—including the 31st MEU—now moving toward the region.

The looming 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to begin in 77 days, adds another layer of pressure. With Iran’s national team matches scheduled for Los Angeles and Seattle, the outcome of these 10 days will determine if the "Beautiful Game" can proceed or if the global event will be overshadowed by a total regional war.
