Operation Epic Fury Enters Third Day as Conflict Spills into Lebanon and Gulf

The Middle East has entered a state of high-intensity regional warfare as Operation Epic Fury—the joint U.S.-Israeli campaign against Iran—spills across multiple borders.

Following the reported death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in initial strikes, a massive wave of retaliatory fire from Iran and its proxies has ignited a second front in Lebanon and targeted key U.S. interests across the Gulf.

The Lebanon Front Ignites

In the early hours of Monday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched what they described as a "decapitation and degradation" campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The strikes targeted weapons caches and command centers in Beirut's southern suburbs and southern villages.

The IDF has issued a sweeping evacuation order for 50 villages, instructing civilians to flee immediately as Israel anticipates a prolonged exchange with the militant group, which has been firing rockets and drones at northern Israel in "vengeance" for the strikes on Tehran.

First U.S. Combat Deaths

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the first American fatalities of the conflict on Sunday. Three U.S. service members were killed and five others seriously wounded, reportedly during a missile strike on a base in Kuwait.

From his residence at Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump struck a somber but defiant tone. Admitting that "sadly, there will likely be more" casualties, he vowed that the U.S. would "avenge their deaths" and predicted the military operation could last up to four weeks.

Regional Contagion and Infrastructure Hits

The conflict’s reach has expanded with unprecedented speed:

  • Cyprus: A suspected drone strike hit the British RAF Akrotiri airbase. While damage was limited, it marked a rare direct attack on British sovereign territory in the Mediterranean.

  • The Gulf: Explosions were reported in Dubai, Doha, and Manama. In the UAE, the commercial hub of Jebel Ali Port and landmarks like the Burj Al Arab reportedly sustained damage from intercepted debris or direct hits.

  • Aviation & Oil: Global travel has been thrown into chaos with the closure of airspace across the Gulf. Oil prices have spiked as markets react to threats against the Strait of Hormuz.

Diplomatic Deadlock

Despite the escalating violence, the path to de-escalation remains blocked. Iran's Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, explicitly ruled out negotiations with Washington on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has authorized the use of British bases for "defensive" U.S. operations but maintains that British forces will not join the offensive at this stage.
