Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been killed in a major joint military operation conducted by the United States and Israel,
Iranian state media confirmed on Sunday, triggering widespread global concern and plunging the Middle East into heightened instability.
The unprecedented strikes, which began on Saturday and targeted dozens of military, political and leadership sites across Iran, were described by the United States and Israel as necessary pre-emptive actions aimed at dismantling Iran’s missile and nuclear infrastructure and neutralizing senior regime figures.
US President Donald Trump announced Khamenei’s death on social media, calling him “one of the most evil people in history” and urging Iranians to “take back your country.” He reiterated that pressure on Iran would continue until Washington’s objectives were achieved.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said evidence clearly showed key leadership compounds had been struck and numerous senior officials were killed in the operation. He justified the campaign as a defensive necessity to protect Israel from what he called “persistent threats” from Iran.
Civilian Casualties and War Crime Allegations
The Iranian envoy to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, condemned the strikes during an emergency Security Council meeting, calling them “a war crime and a crime against humanity.”
He said that rising civilian death tolls, including significant child casualties at a school strike in Minab, constituted acts of aggression under international law.
Iranian officials alleged that densely populated areas and civilian infrastructure were hit, with more than 100 schoolchildren reported killed in the attack on a girls’ elementary school in Hormozgan province — allegations that have drawn sharp international scrutiny.
The United States and Israel have defended their actions at the UN, saying their decision to strike was lawful and necessary to uphold global security and curb threats posed by Tehran’s alleged weapons programmes.
US representatives cited long-standing Security Council resolutions concerning Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Regional and Global Repercussions
Iran’s paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) vowed “regret-inducing punishment” against US and Israeli forces, with officials warning of intensified offensive operations.
Tehran has already launched missile and drone strikes targeting US military bases and allied sites in the Middle East, including in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.
The conflict has disrupted civilian travel and regional logistics as several nations closed airspace in response to escalating hostilities, and flights were grounded or diverted across the Gulf.
Energy markets also reacted, as concerns mounted over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil and gas shipments that could be jeopardised amid the rising conflict.
Diplomatic Backlash and Succession Crisis in Tehran
Global leaders have urged restraint. Some members of the UN Security Council expressed alarm at the escalation, with Russia’s envoy disputing US claims about Iran’s nuclear intentions and questioning the justification for the strikes.
Iran faces a constitutional and political crisis following Khamenei’s death. A succession process overseen by the Assembly of Experts — a clerical body — is expected, though assembling it amid active conflict may prove difficult and could leave a temporary leadership vacuum.
Aftermath and Uncertain Future
The death of Ayatollah Khamenei, who led Iran’s political and religious establishment for more than three decades, represents a turning point with unpredictable consequences.
Trump’s administration has framed the strikes as an unprecedented blow to Iran’s regime, while Tehran’s government and allies decry the actions as unlawful aggression.
As diplomatic efforts falter and military engagement intensifies, the international community faces a critical moment in pursuing de-escalation and preventing broader conflict across an already fragile region.
