The Middle East crisis deepened after Iran confirmed that senior security figure Ali Larijani was killed in an Israeli airstrike.
Regarded as a key strategist within Iran’s power structure, his death marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. Iranian military leadership swiftly reacted, warning that a strong and calculated retaliation is imminent.
Tehran Promises Strong Response
Iranian Army Chief Amir Hatami declared that those responsible would face a “decisive and deterrent” response. Iranian officials described the killing as a direct attack on the country’s leadership, vowing that revenge would be carried out at a time and place chosen by Tehran.
Missile Strikes Hit Central Israel
Soon after the threat, Iran launched missiles toward Israel. Authorities in Israel reported that two civilians were killed in the Tel Aviv area, specifically in Ramat Gan. Emergency responders said several others were injured, while buildings and infrastructure sustained damage from missile impacts and falling debris.
Conflict Spreads Across the Region
The situation is rapidly expanding beyond Iran and Israel. Israeli forces conducted additional strikes in Lebanon, where officials reported multiple deaths and injuries.
Meanwhile, Gulf nations including Saudi Arabia and Kuwait activated air defenses to intercept drones and missiles. A projectile also landed near a military installation in the United Arab Emirates, highlighting the widening scope of the conflict.
US Intensifies Involvement, Allies Divided
The United States confirmed it had targeted Iranian missile facilities near the Strait of Hormuz, citing risks to global shipping. At the same time, U.S. President Donald Trump criticised NATO allies for refusing to support Washington’s position, stating that the US no longer relies on their assistance in the conflict.
Internal Disagreements and Civilian Impact
The war is also creating divisions within the United States, with a senior counterterrorism official stepping down in protest, arguing Iran did not pose an immediate threat.
On the ground in Iran, civilians are living under constant fear as airstrikes and security crackdowns continue, disrupting daily life.
Risk of Wider Regional War
With retaliatory threats, ongoing strikes, and increasing international involvement, fears are growing that the conflict could escalate into a broader regional war.
Observers warn that continued escalation may further destabilize the Middle East and impact global security and energy routes.
