Bangladesh Govt Calls for Nationwide Energy Conservation Amid Global Supply Risks

The government of Bangladesh has urged people and institutions across the country to adopt energy-saving practices as geopolitical tensions continue to raise concerns about possible disruptions in international fuel supply chains.

In a notice issued on 5 March 2026, the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (Bangladesh) advised citizens, government offices, autonomous bodies, private organizations, and industries to reduce unnecessary fuel and energy consumption.

Authorities said the precautionary guidance comes amid growing instability in global energy markets caused by tensions in the Middle East. Officials warned that any escalation of international conflict could affect fuel import costs and supply stability.

The ministry stressed the responsible use of natural gas, recommending that consumers use gas only for essential household and operational purposes. Consumers were also advised to check gas lines regularly to prevent leakage and avoid any illegal connection or unauthorized use of gas.

Regarding petroleum products, the government encouraged the public to rely more on public transportation rather than private vehicles whenever possible. The notice also suggested carpooling and avoiding non-essential travel to help lower fuel demand.

Government institutions have been instructed to maintain efficient fuel management during office operations and official programmes. Private sector organizations were also asked to follow similar conservation measures and promote energy efficiency in workplaces.

Officials said the initiative is intended to strengthen national energy security and help ensure uninterrupted fuel supply if international market volatility worsens.

The ministry called on all stakeholders to cooperate by practising prudent energy use and raising public awareness about conservation.
