Tensions between Iran and the US–Israel alliance escalated sharply Sunday after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed there were “indications” that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, may no longer be functioning in his leadership role following coordinated strikes in Tehran.
Netanyahu, speaking after Israeli officials confirmed attacks on what they described as high-level regime compounds, referred to Khamenei as a “dictator” and said military operations would persist “for as long as required.”
Images circulating online showed damage near sections of the Supreme Leader’s compound, though Iranian authorities have neither confirmed injuries nor addressed claims about Khamenei’s status.
Widespread Strikes and Mounting Casualties
Joint US–Israeli operations reportedly targeted command centers, intelligence hubs and strategic security infrastructure across several Iranian cities. Israeli officials said senior regime figures were among those killed, but these claims have not been independently verified.
Iran’s Red Crescent reported that nationwide casualties have surpassed 200 fatalities, with several hundred more injured.
One of the most devastating incidents occurred in Minab, in Hormozgan province, where a strike hit a girls’ elementary school.
Iranian state media reported that dozens of children were killed in the attack, prompting widespread condemnation inside the country.
Tehran described the strikes as blatant violations of its sovereignty and vowed retaliation, stating that civilian deaths would not go unanswered.
Iranian Retaliation Expands Regionally
Iran responded with missile and drone launches targeting areas across the Gulf region. Explosions and air defense interceptions were reported in Dubai, Doha, Bahrain and Kuwait — all locations with US military facilities or strategic partnerships with Washington.
In Qatar, footage verified by local authorities appeared to show a missile impact in a residential zone, triggering a significant explosion.
Doha condemned the strike as a serious breach of sovereignty and warned that it reserved the right to respond under international law.
Across the Gulf, air defense systems were activated, and emergency services responded to scattered structural damage and fires.
Political Messaging Intensifies
US President Donald Trump characterized the strikes as “major combat operations” and publicly encouraged Iranians to seek political change.
Netanyahu also issued a direct message to the Iranian population, calling the moment a “historic opportunity” to challenge their leadership and urging mass civic action.
The statements suggest that beyond military objectives, political calculations may be shaping the strategy of Washington and Jerusalem.
Global Reaction and Security Concerns
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed British aircraft were participating in defensive coordination in the region to protect personnel and allied interests.
He called for restraint but emphasized the importance of regional security.
The United Nations Security Council convened emergency discussions as fears grew of a broader regional war. Diplomatic channels remain active but appear increasingly strained amid continued exchanges.
Prolonged Conflict Feared
Israel confirmed ongoing air operations over Iranian territory, with additional explosions reported overnight. Communication limitations within Iran have made independent verification of events difficult.
Global oil markets reacted immediately to the escalation, particularly amid concerns about the safety of shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz — a key artery for global energy supplies.
Analysts warn that any sustained disruption could carry significant economic consequences worldwide.
With both sides demonstrating readiness for continued confrontation, international observers caution that the crisis may be entering one of its most volatile periods in recent history.
Civilian casualties are rising, retaliatory strikes are spreading geographically, and diplomatic space appears to be narrowing rapidly.
