Modi Addresses Knesset, Expands India–Israel Strategic Engagement

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a historic address at the Knesset during his state visit to Israel, becoming the first Indian premier to speak before the Israeli parliament. The visit highlighted the continued expansion of diplomatic, economic and security cooperation between the two nations.

Historic Parliamentary Address

In his speech to Israeli lawmakers, Modi described India and Israel as ancient civilizations rooted in democratic traditions. He said bilateral relations are grounded in shared experiences and growing collaboration in innovation, trade and technology.

Modi noted Israel’s reputation as a global innovation hub and said India is also advancing its startup and technology ecosystem. He added that both countries are well positioned to deepen cooperation as India continues its economic rise and Israel maintains its leadership in high-tech sectors.

Focus on AI, Trade and Investment

A major theme of the address was collaboration in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. Modi said innovation-driven partnerships would play a central role in shaping the next phase of bilateral ties.

He referred to the bilateral investment treaty signed last year, stating that it provides greater certainty for businesses and investors in both countries. Officials from both sides have indicated that trade volumes have increased significantly in recent years, with cooperation spanning defense, agriculture, cybersecurity and advanced research.

Security Cooperation and Counterterrorism

Addressing regional security, Modi condemned the October 7 attacks and expressed solidarity with Israel. He said India stands firmly against terrorism and supports sustained and coordinated international efforts to combat extremist violence.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed Modi at the parliamentary session, thanking India for its support and describing the relationship as strong and enduring. Netanyahu said cooperation between the two democracies has expanded across strategic sectors.

Knesset Medal Presented

During the session, Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana awarded Modi the Knesset Medal, an honorary recognition granted for strengthening relations between India and Israel. Israeli officials said the award reflects appreciation for efforts to deepen strategic partnership.

Diaspora and Historical Connections

Modi also spoke about the Indian Jewish community living in Israel, including members of the Bnei Menashe community, acknowledging their role in Israeli society while maintaining cultural links to India.

He recalled the historical presence of Indian soldiers in the region during World War I, noting that thousands lost their lives. Modi also praised Indian workers and caregivers in Israel for their contributions, including during difficult periods.

Bilateral Talks and Agreements

Modi was received by Netanyahu upon arrival at Ben-Gurion Airport before traveling to Jerusalem for the Knesset address. He signed the parliament’s Guest Book, emphasizing shared commitments to freedom, pluralism and the rule of law.

As part of the visit, the leaders are scheduled to visit Yad Vashem and hold expanded discussions in Jerusalem. Officials said agreements are expected to be signed in economic, security and diplomatic fields.

Although some opposition lawmakers initially boycotted parts of the special session due to domestic political disagreements, they returned for Modi’s speech, citing respect for bilateral relations.

The visit marks another step in the evolving partnership between India and Israel, as both countries continue to broaden engagement across strategic and economic sectors.
