Bangladesh:
A domestic worker who allegedly fled after killing a woman and her teenage daughter in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur has been arrested from the Koyarchar area of Nalchity in Jhalakathi.
Police say the killings took place after the housemaid was caught trying to flee with stolen gold ornaments and household items.
The detainee, Ayesha Akhter, 20, was arrested early Wednesday along with her husband Jamal Sikder, 25. Ayesha is originally from Salimganj in Narsingdi, while her husband is a resident of Koyarchar.
Caught While Stealing, Killed to Escape: Police
According to Sub-Inspector Shahidul Islam, the investigation officer of Mohammadpur Police Station, preliminary interrogation revealed that Ayesha attempted to escape with gold jewellery when homeowner Laila Afroza, 48, intercepted her. A scuffle ensued involving Laila and her daughter Nafisa Nawal Binte Aziz, 15.
Police claim Ayesha then used a knife to attack and kill both mother and daughter before fleeing the house.
Ayesha and her husband later took shelter at her in-laws' home in Nalchity, where the arrest was made with the help of surveillance and intelligence.
The killings occurred between 7:51 am and 9:35 am on Monday. Laila’s husband A.Z.M. Azizul Islam filed a murder case that night.
Suspect Claims She Acted Out of Rage
In a separate statement to police, Ayesha claimed the murders were not planned, saying she acted “in the heat of the moment.”
She alleged that a few days earlier, some money had gone missing from the apartment and she was blamed and physically assaulted multiple times by Laila. The humiliation, she claimed, triggered her violent reaction.
However, investigators remain doubtful of her explanation. They say they are examining whether there was any deeper motive behind the killings.
CCTV Clues and Suspicious Behaviour
Police revealed that Ayesha had joined the household only four days before the murder. She regularly arrived at the building either in a burqa or with her face covered. CCTV footage showed her entering the building on the day of the murder wearing a burqa, but leaving later wearing the school uniform of the victim, Nafisa.
Investigators say this change of clothing indicates preparation to disguise her escape.
Husband Detained First; Arrest Made Using His Information
Officials from DMP’s Tejgaon Division reported that Ayesha’s husband, Jamal (also referred to as Rabbi in some statements), was detained from Savar first. Based on the information he provided, police were able to locate and arrest Ayesha from Nalchity shortly afterward.
Police to Brief Media on Thursday
Deputy Commissioner Md. Ibne Mizan of DMP’s Tejgaon Division said Ayesha and her husband will be interrogated further, and a detailed briefing will be provided at a press conference on Thursday.
